From January 1, Serbia allows the movement of cars with Kosovo license plates on its territory

The Government of Serbia said that from January next year, it will allow the movement of cars with RKS license plates of the Republic of Kosovo through its territory.

Currently, citizens of Kosovo who move through the territory of Serbia with Kosovo license plates, cover the part where RKS is written with adhesive paper.

The decision was announced by the head of the office for Kosovo in the government of Serbia, Petar Petkovic, in a press conference in Belgrade, during which he said that with this Serbia is respecting the agreement reached in 2011 in Brussels on free movement and facilitation of movement. of cars for Kosovo Serbs.

"The decision was actually our obligation from the agreement on freedom of movement from 2011, signed by Borko Stefanovic, which refers to RKS license plates and Kosovo identity cards, the acceptance of Kosovo drivers' licenses and is the result of the agreements at that time and the attitude of that government towards the Serbs and the dialogue", he said.
The agreement was supposed to be implemented by the end of 2011, but developments on the ground made it impossible.

The Serbian official said that today's decision "will be an additional impetus not only for the 'Open Balkans', but will make life easier for the Serbs in Kosovo, as they mostly use the border crossings. In fact, we have helped them to move and live normally, because freedom of movement is necessary, unlike (Prime Minister Albin) Kurti, who violates freedom of movement, as he violates the rights of Serbs in Kosovo every day," he said. , underlining that by recognizing Kosovo's license plates, the Serbian state is also recognizing its independence.

"It is an important and significant decision that clearly shows that there is no recognition of Kosovo and that there is no membership of Kosovo in the United Nations Organization as well as in other UN organizations and agencies... Let's negotiate and discuss in terms of compromise, but in no way recognition or membership of Kosovo in the UN", said Petkovic.
The Serbian authorities said they will place notices at the border crossings stating that the possibility of crossing the border with RKS license plates is done "for purely practical reasons", to make freedom of movement easier, and cannot be interpreted as recognition of independence of "Kosovo",

In August last year, Kosovo and Serbia reached an agreement on the use of identification documents and car license plates.

On December 15, meanwhile, the deadline for Serbian residents in the north of Kosovo to replace their car plates issued by Serbia with plates of the Republic of Kosovo expired. According to the Kosovo authorities, about 4 thousand 200 have new license plates, while many others have registered their cars in Serbia and are allowed to use them in Kosovo as well as the license plates of any other foreign country.

The authorities had postponed several times the deadline for the registration of cars to give more time to the citizens in the north of Kosovo, who since the post-war have been using license plates issued by the Serbian authorities with the names of the cities of Kosovo.

The license plate issue has often led to high tensions between Kosovo and Serbia while pushing Western diplomats to speed up the process of normalizing relations between the two countries amid concerns about stability in the region, especially after the September 24 events in northern Kosovo. While Pristina is required to establish the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority, Belgrade is required to fulfill the obligations that lead to the de facto recognition of Kosovo./VOA
